Criminal Justice System
The common thread that runs through our jails and prisons is failed educations and non-existent mental health and homelessness support. The majority of incarcerated men and women do not have a high school diploma, too many others are trapped in homelessness or mental illness. Without support they have nowhere to turn but to the state for the housing of last resort. I'll work to make or prisons safe and humane. People need opportunity to succeed and I'll let teachers to teach to the student and not to the test. I'll work to create jobs to take men and women off the street and for meaningful programs to support those who suffer from mental illness. Education and mental health resources alone could cut our prison populations in half. We also need to get bad law off the books. A kid being late to school is no longer a matter of counseling, it's a misdemeanor. 10 tardies, that includes getting into class a couple of minutes late, 10 tardies and a child can be charged with a crime. That's wrong. We need to clear the books of laws that just make no common sense.
Immigration Reform
We are all immigrants. Texas needs laborers, new blood in the market and the benefits of a vast underground economy brought into our open economy. We can legislate common sense solutions. Immigrant labor is the profit margin for our agriculture, business, construction and service industries. It's just right to make it easier for businesses to flourish and at the same time afford hard working men and women the chance to succeed.
Healthcare & Medicaid Expansion
The people of District 90 work hard day in and day out providing for their families. They should not have to fear losing everything over a single illness or accident. When money is so tight that even something as minor as the flu can push a family into the streets there must be other healthcare resources. Making healthcare available and affordable with programs like the Affordable Care Act and its subsidies is critical. We cannot crush families on the edge by starving Medicaid when money is ready and waiting for us to use. I'll work with hospitals like JPS where over a million patient visits a year are served. I'll fight to keep the ACA strong and to reinstate funds blocked from public health programs like Medicaid. Insuring access to affordable healthcare helps hold families together and is good for business.
Jobs and Economic Development
Texas is front and center in the creation of jobs and a growing economy. But this doesn't touch everyone's life. We need to make it easier for the people of District 90 to create and grow their own businesses. I'll make sure the parts of District 90 that have gone for decades without real growth will expand, grow businesses and create good jobs. I'll work to bring business growth so folks don't have to commute for an hour or more just to put bread on the table.
Public Education
Education is the keystone to all successes in our society. A good education is the base from which all other goals are reachable. A failed education costs us all for the lifetime of the child left behind. I'll fight to reinstate funds to our public education budget. I'll fight to make sure teachers are allowed to teach, engage their students. No student should be force-fed a lifeless curriculum designed only to pass one test, but leave thousands of students unprepared for success.
Poverty & Homelessness
The statistics are awful, but statistics don't matter to the men, women and children who are homeless, or living in poverty. It's not laziness. It's not a lifestyle choice. It's a failure on the part of the richest government in human history to make as secure a safety net for her people as she makes for her businesses. I'll fight to create jobs and keep people who are a paycheck away from disaster safely in their homes. I'll fight to make it just as possible for a person in District 90 to climb up and succeed as Austin has made it for a big business to succeed.
Transportation and Traffic
Texas sees thousands of new residents everyday. Our roads and highways become more and more crowded, less and less adequate. I'll fight to make public transportation; bus, light rail and heavy rail, bridges and roads work for a growing Texas.
Access to College & Trade School
Anyone who wants an education must not be denied an education. It is a fact that the higher the level of education the higher the income potential. I'll work with college and trade school administrators to make sure that everyone who wants to learn is given access to the tools and support to make that goal a reality. I'll fight for you in Austin to eliminate roadblocks to the advantages of a good higher education
Drugs in Communities
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to the problem of drug abuse and the dealers who follow it. I'll work with individual community leaders to find exactly what programs would most benefit their unique neighborhood. Whether expanded police patrols, COPS programs and neighborhood watch units, homeless support and after school programs I'll use every tool at my disposal to fight together with the people of District 90 against this destructive problem.
